Cleaning the dishwasher sounds counterintuitive. Most people think, "Isn't it a self-cleaning appliance?" Well, not really. If you want to prolong your dishwasher's life, you will need to do more than just rinse your dishes. A neglected dishwasher can cause costly problems in the long run. Take preventative action now by following these dishwasher maintenance tips.

Clean the filter regularly. Remove the bottom rack and locate the filter (usually in the floor of the dishwasher). Remove and rinse it under running water, using a soft brush to remove stubborn debris.

Run a cleaning cycle monthly. Place a cup of white vinegar on the top rack and run a hot water cycle. This helps remove buildup and odors.

Clean the spray arms. Remove them periodically and clear any debris from the spray holes using a toothpick or small brush.

Wipe the door and gaskets. Food particles and grime can accumulate around the door edges and rubber gaskets. Clean these areas regularly with a damp cloth.

Check and clean the drain. Remove any debris from around the drain area to prevent clogs.

Leave the door slightly open between cycles to allow the interior to dry and prevent mold and mildew growth.
