Fire safety is a critical aspect of home maintenance, and taking proactive steps can save lives and prevent significant property damage. Whether it's ensuring your smoke detectors are functional or creating a fire escape plan, these essential tips will help you safeguard your home and loved ones.

Install smoke detectors on every level of your home, inside bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas. Test them monthly and replace batteries at least once a year. Replace the entire smoke detector unit every 10 years.

Create and practice a fire escape plan with your family. Identify two ways out of every room and establish a meeting place outside. Practice the plan at least twice a year.

Keep fire extinguishers in key locations, such as the kitchen and garage. Learn how to use them properly - remember the PASS technique: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep.

Never leave cooking unattended, and keep flammable items away from the stove. Kitchen fires are the leading cause of home fires.

Have your heating system, chimney, and fireplace inspected and cleaned annually by a qualified professional.
